Red & White Poppy

We planted a garden with wild flower seeds from Texas.
The poppies bloom in several colors. They kept me busy
taking photographs. Different flowers continue to bloom.

"Lantern"

Size 5" X 7"

Mixed media on paper

This is my first attempt at a small daily painting. I will try to limit these to two hours of my time and leave time to do larger works. I have a collection of many personal photographs that are the basis of almost all my paintings.

"Rusty Pot"

6" X 7" Oil on Paper by Mardelle

On a trip to Montana, I stopped to take a few photos in a deserted mining town. This old coffee pot was sitting, upturned, near the site of an old campfire. I noticed the strange placement of the handle and I couldn't resist.

There really is no such thing as "too much" garlic.

Elissa's Ring

6" X 6" Oil on canvas board
Ellisa is a fine 1877 sailing ship in the Galveston harbor. We had a wonderful adventure aboard this historical landmark. There were so many interesting things to see and photograph as long as we were safely at anchor.
I am back. I had eye surgery and could not see to paint for several months.

This is one in a collection of photographs from a deserted mining town in Montana. It was just sitting near an old campfire site. I noticed that there are actually two handles. One is near the bottom of the pot. The other one was probably hung on a crosspiece over the fire. Time had washed away the soot, but rust was making it's mark.

"Cut the Butter"

7" X 5" Image area Oil on textured paper by Mardelle
This is the last example on textured paper. It is too rough for the kind of detail that I like to include. It was a "quickie" and I liked the challenge of completing it in less than an hour.

"Pepper & Salt"

Native American Pottery is one of the things we enjoy collecting when we travel. This set of pepper and salt shakers are from the Acoma people and are signed. They were accompanied by a much larger pot that I will attempt to paint in the near future.

"Arches In Blue"

We were ashore in Old Mexico at this time last year. I was excited to find lots of architectural subjects to photograph. This corner building seemed to contain a maze of arches and shadows.

"Lantern"

5" X 7" Image area Mixed media on textured paper by Mardelle
This is my first daily painting. I will try to limit these to leave time to do other works. My large collection of photographs will always be my inspiration. This will be the first in a series taken while on a cruise to old Mexico. I like a variety of subjects as well as a variety of media and techniques. I hope my audience likes at least one of them as time goes by.

"Coffee Pot and Corn"

10" X 14" Watercolor on Illustration board by Mardelle
Private collection
This is one of my teaching tools. Students usually guess that it is either an acrylic or an oil painting. I refer to it as a "dry brush watercolor". The transparent watercolor is painted directly on the dry illustration board. I like this technique, but there is very little room for error.

"Just Hangin Out"

10" X 14" Acrylic on archival paper by Mardelle
Private collection
The color, texture and design found in objects weathered by time and the elements are seldom seen by the casual observer at a distance. I enjoy bringing each one within close range to reveal the charm as seen through my eyes. This rusty old lantern was just hanging on the wall in an old mining town in Montana.

"Pick-um-up"

5" X 11" Image area Limited edition print by Mardelle
On my way home one afternoon, I noticed this very neatly restored and polished truck. I stopped and chatted with the proud owner for a few minutes. He was happy to give me permission to take and use photographs of his proud possession.

"Abandoned"

At one time I sold real estate part time and enjoyed investigating the land and buildings on the rural properties I had listed. I found this old car hidden behind the barn and quite out of sight from the frontage road. I was delighted by my discovery!

"Hung Out to Dry"

8" X 10" Image area Limited edition print by Mardelle
We owned and rode horses as a family all the years my children were growing up. We lived a few miles out of town and frequently enjoyed sunset trail rides in the surrounding countryside. We often saw roadrunners, bobcats, armadillos, and lots of deer when the children were quiet. Those evenings make up a few of my best loved memories.

"First Pair of Spurs"

This is a detail of the larger print that more clearly shows the detailed textures.
9 1/2" X 11" Image area Limited edition print by Mardelle
My son was an avid horseman and often participated in 4H horse shows and community playdays. These were his first pair of spurs. I still have them and the memories of those years. Now he hand forges Damascus steel to create spurs for the public. He recently contributed a pair of engraved spurs to raise funds for the Happy Trails children's charity. I am very proud of his accomplishments.
